Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Mountain of God
Tucked away in the dramatic landscapes of northern Tanzania lies a mysterious and sacred peak: Ol Doinyo Lengai, which means “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language. Rising to an elevation of about 2,962 meters (9,718 feet), this active volcano is not only a geological wonder but also a spiritual landmark for the local Maasai communities.
A Unique Volcano
Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a rare type of lava that is unusually cool (around 500–600°C) and flows with a consistency more like oil than molten rock. Its pale lava turns black upon exposure to air, giving the summit a surreal, otherworldly appearance.
Unlike the classic red-hot lava seen in other volcanoes, Lengai’s eruptions are often less explosive but still dangerous and unpredictable. It last erupted in 2023, reminding us that this sleeping giant is still very much alive.
While most travelers to Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit head straight for Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Mount Kilimanjaro, Ol Doinyo Lengai remains an off-the-beaten-path gem for adventurous souls. Located near Lake Natron, the mountain is accessible from Arusha and pairs perfectly with cultural visits to Maasai villages or bird-watching excursions by the flamingo-rich lake.
Climbing the Mountain of God
Climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai is no easy feat. Treks typically begin at midnight to avoid the extreme daytime heat and to reach the summit by sunrise. The steep, crumbly trail and harsh terrain challenge even experienced hikers, but the reward a panoramic view of the Great Rift Valley and surrounding volcanic plains is unforgettable.
