Meet Tanzania Monkeys
Tanzania’s Northern Circuit isn’t just home to the Big Five, it’s also a haven for some of East Africa’s most fascinating primates. As you explore the lush forests and open savannahs of places like Lake Manyara, Arusha National Park, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, keep an eye out for these playful and intelligent creatures.
Despite their name, blue monkeys aren’t exactly blue, they have a silvery-grey coat with a dark face and white throat. Commonly seen in Arusha National Park, they prefer forested areas and live in large social groups. Listen for their soft, twittering calls high in the canopy.
Easily recognized by their black faces and white fringe of fur, Vervet monkeys are widespread across the Northern Circuit. They’re incredibly adaptable and often spotted near lodges or campsites, so keep your snacks secure they’re known for their curiosity.
Among the largest primates in Tanzania, olive baboons roam in large troops and are often seen along roadsides in Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks. They’re highly social and have complex hierarchies, making them fascinating to watch.
These striking monkeys, with their flowing black and white coats, are mostly found in the forested areas of Arusha and Ngorongoro. Unlike other monkeys, they don’t have thumbs, but they’re incredible tree acrobats and rarely touch the ground.
