Exploring Empakaai Crater
Nestled in the highlands of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Empakaai Crater is one of Tanzania’s most enchanting hidden treasures. Unlike the famous Ngorongoro Crater, Empakaai is less visited, offering a peaceful and unspoiled wilderness experience.
The crater stretches about 6 kilometers wide and is renowned for its breathtaking emerald lake that covers nearly half of its floor. This alkaline lake attracts flocks of flamingos, painting the water pink during certain seasons. Surrounded by steep, forested walls, the crater is also home to a variety of wildlife including buffalo, bushbuck, monkeys, and numerous bird species.
What makes Empakaai especially unique is the chance to explore it on foot. Guided hikes down into the crater give visitors a close encounter with nature, from lush montane forests to the shimmering lake shore. On a clear day, hikers are rewarded with stunning views that stretch as far as Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred volcano of the Maasai, and even Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
For travelers on the Northern Circuit, Empakaai offers a magical blend of adventure, tranquility, and scenic beauty. It’s a place where you can step off the beaten path and truly connect with Tanzania’s wild landscapes.
