We will start at any hotel of your choice in the island, and head to the trailhead, where we will spend half a day hiking leisurely in the forest and volcano slopes at the base. It can take the whole day for the roundtrip circuit through the evergreen conifer forest to the black sand and lava summit area with bizarre vegetation, so bring as much water as you may need for the day and any snacks.
A lot of totally endemic plants and birds, all rare by their very essence of evolving on a remote detached island, live within the forest. We will try to spot them in the woods and slopes today as we go.
On the way back down and back to town, and depending on your pace, if there is time and the researchers and locals have opened it to the public, we may stop at the “dragon” dig and archeological site here, a few km away (small island, but lots of nature and history.)
-End of Tour-
*Please note a moderate to a high level of physical fitness is required to summit Mount Karthala and Karthala Volcano. It is also perfectly acceptable as an alternative to do a beach and forest nature hike today rather than the summit, as an alternate.
