The Big Five Explained, What They Are and Where to Spot Them in Tanzania

If you’re planning a safari in Tanzania, you’ve probably heard of the Big Five. But what exactly are they, and why are they so famous?

What Are the Big Five?

The Big Five originally referred to the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot, but today they’re the most sought-after sightings on an African safari:

  1. Lion – Known as the “King of the Jungle,” lions are social cats often seen in prides. Best seen in Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
  2. Leopard – Elusive and solitary, they’re often found lounging in trees. Spot them in the Serengeti and Tarangire.
  3. Elephant – Africa’s gentle giants, known for their intelligence. Huge herds can be found in Tarangire National Park.
  4. Buffalo – Tough and unpredictable, African buffaloes are commonly spotted in most parks.
  5. Rhino – The most endangered of the Big Five. Black rhinos can sometimes be seen in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Where to See Them in Tanzania

Serengeti National Park – Great for lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo.

Ngorongoro Crater – One of the best places to see all five, including the rare black rhino.

Tarangire National Park – Especially good for elephants and leopards.

Spotting all five in a single trip is a thrill, and very possible in Tanzania.
